Ed Gartland

I did 10 years active (6 USMC/4 USAF ) plus 17 reserve (11 USMC/4 USAF/2 Army).  After Thai and Lao language training at NSA, I joined the 2600 field doing mostly airborne collection in Southeast Asia and Latin America,  In the USAF I instructed for a year at the Airborne Voice Intercept Course in San Angelo, TX.  That was followed by a return to the airborne business with tours in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam (RC130Bs) and Korat, Thailand (EC121Ds, College Eye Task Force).  Got out in Sep 70, but stayed USAFR as Airborne Radio Op/Loadmaster with a Search & Rescue Sq.  Discharged in Oct 76 when my civilian job took me overseas (Panama Canal Zone).   Joined 32nd ITT, USMCR April Fool's Day, 1982, spent 6 weeks at Ft McCoy, WI and became an 0251.  Hired by NSA as a Thai Linguist/Analyst in Aug 83 and changed my reserve assignment to the USMCR Cryptologic Program as a Collection Manager and a 1st Radio Bn (MCAS KBay) IMA.  Spent 86-91 as a Senior Watch Officer at the US Embassy Bangkok (recalled for Desert Storm) and 91-94 as a Plans & Programs Officer at HQ V Corps, Frankfurt, Germany.   Reserve assignment become Humint Collection Manager at HQ EUCOM JSOC. When USMCR cancelled slots at EUCOM my boss (Chief of Staff V Corps) arranged for me to drill at USAR MI Group Europe in Heidelberg.  Returned to NSA in Aug 94 as Chief, "B" Group Target Access & Acquisition.  Reserve assignment became Docent at National Cryptologic Museum, Ft Meade, MD.  Retired from the agency Dec 94 and reserves Oct 95.  MOSs were 0231/0251/2629/2643 or 96B/97E/98C/98G in Army speak.  My wife and I own Rainbow Cruises, a cruise only travel agency.

I was with the 32nd ITT Apr 82-Oct 83.  I was a 2629/2643 Sgt E-5 at the time.  Maj Alan Davis was the OIC.  For my 1983 active duty I spent 6 weeks at Ft McCoy and came home as an 0251.  In late 83 my civilian job took me to Ft Meade, MD and I returned to the 2600 field with the MCR Cryptologic Program.

My history is rather convoluted:
1960-66 USMC
1967-71 USAF
1971-75 USAFR
1982-93 USMCR (32nd ITT, Manchester, NH Apr 82-Oct 83
1993-95 Army Reserve

Various DOD agencies
1976-78 Panama Canal Zone
1983-86 Ft Meade, MD
1986-91 US Embassy Bangkok (several TADs to consulates in Udorn and Songkhla)
1991-94 Frankfurt, Germany
1994-95 Ft Meade, MD

I did Thai language school at Ft Meade, MD Apr-Dec 61, followed by Lao Jan-Jun 62.  From that point on, most of my assignments (with the exception of 4 years USAFR in Search and Rescue) were in the 2600 field although I acquired the 0251 MOS at Ft McCoy, WI while a member of the 32nd ITT.  By the time of my retirement, my MOSs were 0231/0251/2629/2643 or 96B, 97E, 98C, 98G if you do Army speak.

Retired from the DOD Dec 94 and finished out my reserve service as a Docent at the National Cryptologic Museum, Ft Meade, MD.  Retired as an E-7 Oct 95.

Now own Rainbow Cruises, a cruise only travel agency.
