4th of July Message from the Chairman

Fireworks over the Iwo Jima Memorial July 4, 2011.

What a sight to behold for all Marines Old Corps or New Corps. Our memorial is the symbol of bravery, valor and honor for all Americans to behold on July 4, 2012. The memories of the sacrifices made by Marines to uphold our unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are legendary. We Marines have been in the forefront of War from the beginning days of our Republic. In fact, the first exercise of military power projection outside the USA was the Barbary Wars.

US Maine First Lieutenant Presley O'Bannon led a mixed force of eight United States Marines and 500 Greeks from the island of Crete, Arab, and Berber mercenaries on a march across the desert from Alexandria, Egypt to assault and to capture the Tripolitan city of Derna. This was the first time in history that the United States flag was raised in victory on foreign soil. This action was memorialized in a line from the Marines' Hymn —"the shores of Tripoli."  So let us all celebrate with pride and pay tribute to our contributions to America with whatever form of barbecue you desire on the 4th. Remember: “When a strong man armed keepeth his Palace, his goods are in Peace.” (Luke 11:21). We the Marines have been the strong men armed since November 10, 1775 and we’ll retain our place in perpetuity. Enjoy the day with family and friends and I’ll see you all in Fort Huachua to celebrate our 237th Birthday.

Vince Burdelski
